Setting up a home based affiliate business can seem like a really great idea.

There are no startup costs as long as you already have a computer and you can just fit the business around your schedule and do as little or as much of it as you want.

So how does home-based affiliate marketing business work in practice?

• You find a merchant with an affiliate program for a product, say a digital camera, computers, books, anything!
• After signing up as an affiliate you will get links and banners containing your affiliate link. Now you start promoting those links or banners. If you have a website in place, you can put up the links on your site pages.
• When visitors click through your links and buy the product at the merchant's site, your affiliate account gets credited with a commission amount - often in real time!

This is great to fit around a full-time job, looking after a family or any other routine and so anyone can do it.

If you search around the Internet you can find many advertisements for home based affiliate business work.

Many make the work seem very easy and state that you can make lots of money very quickly.

Some of them seem too good to be true. Something that you need to bear in mind is that it can be easy to make money and to earn a lot, however the figures quoted are not profit.

If you invest a great deal of money into advertising something, then you are bound to make some money back and hopefully a lot, but there is no guarantee that it will be more than you have actually paid out.

Make sure you consider the profits and how much return you expect and should get on any investment you make into the business.

It is important to remember why you are doing it and how much money you are hoping to earn from it.
